What a great survey. To find better problems to solve. That makes one stop and think. I'm finding some kind of comfort in using older film cameras. Shooting with my NIkomat FT2 and a 35mm f2 is giving me some satisfaction cause it's delayed gratification and anticipation or wonder. Thank-you.

I much prefer a camera with character than quality.
Photography, to me, is about seeing and observing then creating an image from what you see. One has to understand their gear and how to use it. The best gear is the gear you are using right now.
While I agree with the general premise of this video, I think it's important to acknowledge that gear still matters A LOT in photography, and way more so than in other hobbies. There's a certain level of photography that is unattainable without the right tools and we have to acknowledge that in this discussion.
My friends all have the newest Sony or Canon and I’m here seeing absolutely no reason to upgrade my Fuji e/t2 combo. We all shoot for a living. It’s about style mostly I’d say

Puedes ser una persona de gran talento pero si tienes material de baja calidad no llegaras muy lejos,seguro que abandonas…

I still use old miniDV cameras for my personal recordings because I don't need Super Resolution. I just like the look of 4:3, the interlaced home video feel , the low resolution, the imperfect but amazing 30x zoom.
I still use a film camera, when every pic costs you money, you make more thoughtful, more deliberate photos.
I don't know if itr makes me a better photographer, but it's more fun that way. Also, it helps you appreciate your good imperfect photos.

Its a bit ironic that real talent and skill shine the most when you take the money and resources to the minimum. Likewise when there are all the worlds money to use, we often splurge wastefully and do lazy + simply bad solutions by "throwing money" at it.
One good example of creative skill with low budged/tech are the movies from ussr. Lots of great movies were done there with pretty much sticks and stones compared to what Hollywood had available …but yet that really didnt stop them from making good movies – i have no doubt politics were the bigger problem for them.
In economics you can see the same – when you have resource poor country, people tend to be more creative and just smarter with what they have …and then when you have resource rich countries – more often than not the riches turn out to be curse, as it makes the country lazy to put in the real effort to develope things and instead just grab and sell the easiest raw materials to sell as is and skip all the added value proper investment to people and machines could achieve.
Forces you to think of the scene in front of you rather than thinking a sharp fast camera and lens is the magic bullet for ordinary photography.

I worked at a camera store for years, and I always made this point – you can buy the nicest camera in the store but you can still not know what you’re doing. I live by that.

Of course, and then you see a gear head obsessing about what lens to use and carrying a backpack of stuff and their photos suck. Good art doesn’t need the best camera. Literally 95% of every 35mm camera makes the same photo once you stop the lens down to f8. Good photography is all about the artist, their lifestyle, their ability to tell a story and ride waves of creativity that open up doors to people and experiences. You can do that with a phone or a $49 minolta str101.
Thinking new gear will make you better has the same energy as someone saying your camera takes nice pictures.

It definitely depends on the genre of photography. For event photography or sports (or even wildlife) I would say that good high ISO performance, advanced flashes, and advanced/reliable autofocus DO produce better results. You still need to be skilled and there is a point where the tech plateaus, but if I'm covering an event I need something fast and reliable. For something like street photography, I myself may need to be fast, but I can take an old cam and zone focus with the best. An old cam will suffice. Casual social photography or slow intentional documentary will also be serviced well by older cams.
According to any youtuber-photographer that shoots street in New Your gear does not matter. but all of them run Leica M6. Just to be different, I guess
