PhotoCraft vs Photoshop: I gave the loose, open-source PhotoCraft 10 actual Photoshop jobs at the similar laws, from an Instagram …
My verdict in 3 lines:
1. Everyday edits (crop, text, curves, healing, masks): PhotoCraft passed all of them, for free.
2. Skip it for AI cut-outs of people and Generative Fill (not in the app yet). Score: 7/10.
3. Export As with Metadata None kept my planted GPS location. Use Quick Export or Save for Web before you post a photo.
Yes, the voice is AI. Every test, capture and result is real and done by me.
Which job should I score next, or which app should get the 10-job test: FilmCraft, LightCraft or PdfCraft?
Ten days on, I wonder what the score would be today?
we are now on version 14, by the time i finish typing this it may have gone to 15 they are that quick at fixing and improving the software they have created
Please do Vorssaint next. It is a very popular open source tool for mac doing the job of several paid apps.
Try Fog Panther. They focus on one app and for Linux. It is paid app, but that's what will keep them going and make it more reliable than volunteer slop (hence GIMP).
I'll stick to Affinity.
if you look at the website, you can also buy it.
therefore , its not a free alternative.
someone hopefully dies for this.
Thanks. It's really nice to know in detail where the app currently at.
New version is 10.0 btw
Hopefully you filed all of these as issues on their github.
It's early alpha. What do you expect?
0.10.0 was released yesterday.
Next test the two most popular photoshop AI clones – photocraft vs patchy.
There are also issues with vector shapes, I am not sure if it's a Pixelmator Pro thing, but exported vector shapes ina PSD file do not show at all in Photocraft but do Affinity. Trying with Affinity to Photocraft, the vector shapes have to be rasterised before editing. This feels like they need to sort that out.
Batch photo editing and metadata removal are an easy fix…remove background and professional generative fill will be hardly mplemented because they completely deny the purpose of artcraft suite:showing how much bloated is the adobe eco system. They could push and optimize more Content-Aware Fill and Seam Carving that are old classic features but this could mean pushing more the ram and gpu usage (and in any case they could never give the same good and natural result of a generative ai diffusion model). i think they will sooner or later integrate a decent 'select subject' feature…the actual one is just based on euristic search on image…and they have to face the challenge to integrate a segmentation model to a rust platform,In old 2018 Photoshop…their segmentation model Adobe Sensei was just 50-100mb offline model….but even such similar size would be a problem that would conflict with the 'lightness' of the project
I love the security check! I did wonder myself…it's open source so nasties I am guessing are spottable, but I did wonder if it 'phoned home'
I wonder if the extra models you can download improve the subject select? They are around 3Gb so I've not done this.
You seem to be missing that this thing is a week or two old. Just wait a couple months.
Even if these apps reach release status, who is guarantees that they will still be around next year or beyond?
Adobe will not disappear overnight and it will remain the industry standard for years to come and big companies will not switch easily. As a designer I have no option then to confirm to that standard if I want to cooperate with other designers.
Some people think the review is pointless. But it's not. A open source replacement of Adobe suite which was practically seemed impossible few weeks ago is changing our assumptions, these helps the people/community understand the the lackings which the community will focus on. That's exactly the point of being opensource. Everyone contributes developing it, this review also contributed in a way. Thanks you for your valuable review, it will definitely help it to grow faster.
As a professional designer who has used Photoshop since installing it with floppy discs, I can tell you that this app is no where near a Photoshop replacement. If I tried to use this app just one day in my production work, it would fail almost everything.
Alpha
The people who are involved in this open source project are hopefully going to see this and make the changes necessary to get a perfect score
is the new version 0.10.0 ??
Very interesting. I want to see if / when the keyboard shortcuts like when holding ALT to get visual feedback with on the fly edits works. auto-fill / remove is kinda a must to have working properly. Selection tools starting to work flawlessly unlike now might indicate this thing is ready for me to give a real good look. I'm encouraged that there are portable app versions of this software. It doesn't even need to be installed to run almost anywhere. Please keep at it. I suspect you will.
Oh dear a month old app is not a perfect replacement for an app with 36 years of development.
The world is ending
slop
It's still in Alpha, but its closest rival should be Affinity, not Adobe, not yet. As much as I hate to admit it, Adobe is still king. Time will tell.
There are more problems on photocraft tbh affinity is lot better when compared to photocraft
Thank you for testing.
i'll wait a few weeks longer.
It's still in Alpha, wait to a full release after Beta to truly test it.
Testing it now is pointless
