Exhibition Marks 70 Years Since Gordon Parks’ Landmark Segregation Pictures Printed in ‘Existence’ Mag

An exhibition commemorates the seventieth anniversary of the landmark e-newsletter of Gordon Parks’ colour pictures of the segregated South in Existence mag

Gordon Parks: The South in Colour is is on view till June 13 at Jackson Wonderful Artwork in Atlanta in partnership with The Gordon Parks Basis.

The exhibition brings in combination greater than thirty pictures from Parks’ “Segregation Tale” collection which used to be revealed in Existence mag in the summertime of 1956. The show off additionally comprises each lesser-known works and a few of Parks’ maximum known pictures, together with At Segregated Consuming Fountain, Cell, Alabama.

The exhibition is curated via Dawoud Bey and is gifted as a part of a yearlong initiative concerned about Parks’ affect on recent Black artists and writers. It’s knowledgeable via Bey’s 2022 essay “The South in Colour” from the expanded version of Gordon Parks: Segregation Tale (2022), which discusses Parks’ pictures taken round Cell, Alabama in the summertime of 1956 for Existence mag.

Within the essay, Bey writes about Parks’ inventive way and states that “those pictures deserve as a lot attention for the standard in their making because the challenge that introduced them into being.”

Parks photographed participants of the Thornton circle of relatives and their prolonged kin, together with the Causey and Tanner households, all over this task. He used a hand-held twin-lens Rolleiflex digital camera and selected to shoot in colour, generating moderately composed square-format pictures that outline the collection. Bey describes how Parks’ “planned possible choices of device, subject matter, and sensibility lend the Black Southern presence, frequently below siege, a way of lives totally and expressively lived.” Bey’s curatorial way is gifted as providing a renewed point of view on Parks’ paintings and inventive way.
