8 months in the past I switched from my Fuji GFX 50r to a Nikon Z7 II. Was once this a excellent transfer and am I pleased with the Nikon digital camera?

I'm seeing this camera has come down quite a bit in price. That's an amazing sensor for under $2k.
I was a z7ii apologetic until I tried z8 with it side by side… it is night & day.. like 10 years apart😅
One annoying aspect of this video is your pronunciation for the letter Z. Why the British have to make everything sound posh I will never understand. So why does Nikon not save a full image when you set for crop? It's very simple, they assume that you chose that setting to reduce the file size. Which can be of benefit if you want to increase the number of shots in Continuous before the buffer fills and reduces the frame rate by a lot. It can also be a benefit if you want smaller image files. In addition while I haven't tested for it I suspect the reduced Data Load of using a DX crop may increase the response rate of the AF system by a notable amount. Basically if you want to shoot wildlife the DX crop mode may be the best mode to choose. Not only do you reduce the Data Load by about 50% you also gain the 1.5 X increase in the effective focal length.
Note, in NX if you do a crop the full image is preserved but what is sent to the printer or exported to different file formats is the crop. Point here is shoot the full image and do your cropping in post and you won't lose image data. I'll also point out that if you do your cropping in Post you will have the option of using a crop that is ideal for what you want instead of predetermined aspect ratio's. Keeping the image sensor clean is actually very simple. Keep the camera facing DOWN at the ground while swapping lenses. BTW, been doing this since I had a stray hair get lodged in the film frame on my Nikon F2 that popped up in every single image for 4 rolls of film. Having a mirror flopping around can create all kinds of odd air currents. I agree the rear screen is much too limited, I suspect that is part of the reason for the rather low price point of this model. However these screens only display a faint shadow of the image in daylight and I'm seriously considering digging out my black cloth for my monorail and packing it in my camera bag to make this screen actually useful outdoors.
To sum it up the Z7 II isn't perfect. I don't think you'll ever find a perfect camera, because there are so many of us out there that you would need an infinite variety of settings and features. The Z7 II is a great camera for landscapes and portraits. For other uses such as Sports and Wildlife it's usable but not even nearly as capable as the D6 III or the D8/D9. However it does provide for some options that will boost it's capability. Such as shooting in DX mode where you'll see a real gain in buffer capacity and data throughput due to the smaller file size. In addition you'll get a 50% gain in the apparent focal length of your lenses. Yes, shooting in DX will reduce the available resolution, but lenses today have become so good that loss won't have a big impact on the final image produced and it does provide some real speed benefits.
i keep telling everyone medium format is not for landscape photography and i stand by my comments. any landscape photographer who's serious about landscapes will always jump back to or to full frame once they realize how medium format cripples them in lens selection. not to mention the horrible shallow depth of field. specially for us who like to get close to our foreground subjects…. no ultra wide fast lenses, no super telephoto lenses….. medium format is simply not designed for landscape work it is for high end portrait and product photography. simple as that
Expensive modern camera and you have to focus by hand because you don’t trust the autofocus????
I’m out.
Which is better ? Z F or Z7 II ?
Sounds like this is for slow shooters as you mentioned. That’s pretty much what I do so this camera is definitely a consideration.
To be entirely honest with you, I don't understand why people use crop modes 😅 Maybe specifically because Nikon gives you what you see in crop modes. You shoot 1:1? Say goodbye to the other pixels! 🙃
I always shoot with the full sensor. Not even in DX mode. Sure, the files are larger. But what if I change my mind about the composition? What if I want the shot a little wider after all? Once the pixels are gone I can't get them back.
Would you have any idea how the Fujifilm X-H2 stacks up against the Z7II?

Jan 11th 2024 : Has NIKON resolved the issues you mention ?
I wish they had implemented the sensor protection screen like on the Z8 and Z9. It is frustrating to see after every clean and a few shots new stains on the sensor. Additionally, like you mentioned the LCD screen flipping out only up and down is another nusiance and I don't know why they did this where everyone out there needs to flip the screen several ways. Especially when taking videos you cannot see yourself and have to use an additional monitor screen. Also the T and Bulb functions are much bettter on Fuji and Canon, where as on Nikon I have to use a remote shutter control when using the T function
"Bitterly, bitterly cold" in April in The UK. Right. British understatement? Thanks for the Z7 II comments.
Thank you ! Should I buy Nikon ZF for Interior and architecture shoot ?
Thanks.
One question… if you use squarespace to get your photos online, how do you get traffic?
You are amazing
We are all amazing
Please do not say bad things about yourself it is not fair with the manifest perfection of our self
Thank you for sharing
It is very useful
Thank you for everything you do!
What should I do so that the videos I shoot vertically on my Nikon Z7ii are also vertical on my computer?
Commit to the crop or just crop in post. Makes no sense to crop and still want more🤦🏾♂️
“If only the Z9 came in a package like this” LOL
I am not understanding the need to gripe as all these “issues” would have been identified through research pre-purchase. I don’t think it’s fair. I love my Z7 coming from a D600.
Love this camera it's $3500 CA amazing! D850 embarrassed and schooled my focus skills so this is a walk in the park. Not a Z8/Z9, but there are some focus tricks it's a very deep menu. Yes, the door opening is super annoying and happens a lot. Also for anyone with big hands, it's incredibly easy to push the lens release button while twisting a zoom barrel, completely disengaging the lens for a total disaster! That button needs better protection. Otherwise, easily best budget 46 pixel camera
I use a Nikon D810 and in crop mode it has a higher max frame rate. Handy for the very occasional sports photography I do
I just bought this camera and I like the sturdiness of the current tilting screen.
FYI, this was as high as my budget would let me go.
Hmmm…. Lens choice? I use GFX 100S with canon 100-400; Fuji gf 35-70 or 32-64, 20-35. For architecture I use Laowa 20mm shift, canon 24TSE, Canon 50mm TSE, both canon lenses with 1.4 extender which means I have 35mm shift and a 70mm shift.
I can a lot of reasons to use Nikon Z but not really lens choice.
Reach is definitely an issue some times and the fact that the crop mode on the GFX is 60MB means you can crop way way in and don’t really need the 600mm or the 800mm.
Still, if you have two photographers discussing camera systems, you’ll probably end up with three opinions.
Fun video. Very glad to see Nikon making a come back. Flange distance and mount size is a really big deal. Time for Nikon to come out with a serious architecture set up.
Lastly, having screen that does not really work in portrait mode on a tripod: not cool at all.
