It should be mentioned that this will not be a mandatory approach whenever there's a color cast on the image! If it has simply been taken with the wrong white balance (even very extreme) you should be able to recover most of the original colors with whitebalance tools just fine, since the color information is technically available, it's just shifted over to a wrong hue. The only situations in which you have to use this techniqe, is if the photo has been taken in a room where there's only a colored light with high saturation, so the entire scene turns monochrome, or if the image has been heavily altered already, by for example completely stripping away some of the RGB channels, making the color information completely unrecoverable.
